Can T20, Technical or Industrial Ethanol Truly Fulfill the Requirements of Fine Perfumery?

Here's a more natural, story-driven version in paragraph form that fits the MHB Essence voice.

Can T20, Technical Grade or Industrial Grade Ethanol Truly Fulfill the Requirements of Fine Perfumery?

Imagine spending thousands of rupees on a perfume. You don't buy it because you need it to survive. You buy it because you want to feel confident. You want to smell attractive. You want to leave a memorable impression. You want compliments from friends, family, colleagues, and loved ones. Fragrance is deeply personal. It becomes part of your identity, part of your memories, and often part of the moments that matter most in life.

Yet while most perfume lovers spend hours discussing fragrance notes, longevity, projection, and designer inspirations, very few stop to ask a simple question: what actually makes up most of the perfume bottle they are holding in their hands?

The truth is that fragrance oil is only part of the story. In many modern perfumes, fragrance materials represent approximately 20% to 40% of the formula, while the remaining 60% to 80% consists of the carrier system, most commonly ethanol. Think about that for a moment. The majority of the perfume is not the fragrance oil. The majority is the carrier. If that carrier plays such a major role in the final product, shouldn't it receive the same attention and scrutiny as the fragrance itself?

In Pakistan's perfume market, there is one name almost every perfumer has heard at some point: T20. Walk through local perfume markets, speak with suppliers, or spend time with beginner perfumers, and the term appears again and again. The reason is simple. T20 is widely available, relatively inexpensive, and often promoted as a cost-effective solution. Many perfumers even use it to clean fragrance residue from beakers, funnels, glassware, and mixing equipment because of its strong solvent properties.

This raises an important question. If a material is valued for its ability to strip fragrance residue from equipment, does that automatically make it the ideal foundation for a premium perfume? Not necessarily.

One of the biggest misconceptions in perfumery is the belief that if a carrier can dissolve fragrance oils, then it is good enough. By that logic, almost anything capable of mixing with fragrance oils would be acceptable. But fine perfumery is not about doing the bare minimum. Fine perfumery is about refinement. It is about creating the best possible experience for the customer.

A great ethanol carrier system does far more than simply dissolve fragrance oils. It influences how the fragrance opens, how it develops, how smoothly it transitions between notes, how cleanly it evaporates, and how pleasant the overall wearing experience feels. Professional fragrance houses do not invest in high-quality perfumery-grade ethanol because they enjoy spending more money. They invest in it because every component of the fragrance matters.

Many people hear the word "ethanol" and assume that all ethanol is the same. In reality, different grades of ethanol are manufactured for different purposes. Some are designed primarily for industrial applications. Others are intended for technical uses where sensory refinement is not a priority. Then there is perfumery-grade ethanol, which is specifically developed for fragrance manufacturing and optimized for fragrance performance. The difference is similar to the difference between ordinary cooking oil and a premium extra virgin olive oil. Both may serve a similar purpose, but the quality of the final experience is not necessarily the same.

Imagine building a luxury home. You carefully select premium marble, premium lighting, premium furniture, and premium décor. Everything looks impressive. Then, in an effort to save money, you decide to compromise on the foundation. Most people would immediately recognize the problem. No matter how beautiful the house appears from the outside, the foundation remains one of its most important components. Perfumery works the same way. A perfume may contain excellent fragrance oils and beautiful packaging, but if the majority of the formula was chosen solely because it was cheaper, can it truly represent the highest possible standard?

At MHB Essence, we believe customers deserve more than shortcuts. Every bottle of perfume represents trust. The customer trusts that the ingredients have been selected thoughtfully. They trust that quality was prioritized over convenience. They trust that the product was created with respect for the person who will ultimately wear it. That is why we believe ingredients should be chosen for their purpose, their performance, and their contribution to the final fragrance experience—not simply because they reduce costs.

This article is not about attacking individual perfumers or businesses. It is about encouraging a conversation that the industry rarely has. If fragrance oils represent only a fraction of the final formula, then perhaps it is time we paid more attention to the ingredient that makes up the majority of the bottle.

The next time you purchase a perfume, don't just ask how long it lasts or which famous fragrance inspired it. Ask what makes up the rest of the formula. Ask what type of ethanol carrier system is being used. Ask whether the ingredients were selected for quality or merely for affordability.

Because great perfumes are not created by great fragrance oils alone.

They are created by great decisions.

And some of the most important decisions are the ones customers never see.
